The first ever Susan G. Komen Central Wisconsin Race for the Cure has been deemed a success.

"It could not have gone better, this was beyond all expectations," says race chair, Barb Klinner.

In the beginning, organizers were told an area of our size here in Northcentral Wisconsin would bring about 1,200 participants. But the community responded, and more than 2,200 people came out to support the cause.

"We ran out of shirts, we ran out of packets, but you know what we didn't run out of people and people willing to make this race a success," says race director, Melissa Cunningham-Campbell.

Klinner says the race brought in well over the $100,000 they set as their fundraising goal. And with all the help from the community, they're already beginning plans for the second Northcentral Wisconsin race.

"The plan is to make this an annual race, and I think this year made it very clear that this community is willing to support it," says Cunningham-Campbell.

They say thanks to all the help from volunteers and participants, the event went smoothly.

"I knew that breast cancer touched almost everyone but I guess I didn't know how profoundly...This was just amazing," Klinner says.

If you missed out on this year's race, you can still make a donation online within the next 30 days. Visit the Komen Central Wisconsin website at: http://komencentralwisconsin.org/
