A Wisconsin woman will be the oldest veteran to fly on the Honor Flight to see to see monuments built in veterans' honor next month in Washington D.C.
Hildegarde Myers, of Janesville, served as a nurse and physical therapist in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. The 102-year-old remembers living in shacks and battling mosquitoes and the rainy season as she waited for boatloads of injured soldiers.
Myers almost ended up near the front lines herself. Just before the atomic bomb dropped she was preparing to follow soldiers into Japan.
Myers will be traveling to Washington D.C. courtesy the Badger Honor Flight in Madison.
The Honor Flight program flys World War II and Korean Veterans to Washington D.C. free of charge.
