Honor Flight Luncheon Honors Spouses

Monday was an emotional day, not just for the dozens of veterans on the Honor Flight, but their spouses too. The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum put on a luncheon just for them. It wasn't just to entertain theses spouses or help them pass the time. Kathy Foley says, "But capture the stories of the spouses as well. They're going to engage in activities that are part of our "Spark" program, which are using artworks to spark or trigger memories."

That's exactly what the event did for Arline Baughman. Her husband, Richard, fought in World War II. She says, "It brings back days when I'd rather try and forget, that we tried to forget, because we were married just two years, we just had a young son, he was only 16 days old when he left."

This luncheon also gave these spouses a reason to smile. "This is wonderful. Getting together with others that we can talk over things and we find out that they have gone through the same thing as I have," says Baughman. Polly Baron says, "For me, personally, it means a lot. I think it was more exciting for me, than my husband preparing to take this trip."

A day that created memories, not just for the veterans, but their spouses too. Foley says, "Maybe, at its simplest, it of course helps the time pass, but I think, more importantly, it gives the spouses something of their own for today."
