Those who risk their lives every day to save ours were honored Friday at a special event.

Globe University's Emergency Services Day allowed the public to meet emergency responders and explore their vehicles and equipment.

"It's important for us to get out with the public because we like them knowing who's going to come to their house if they need us, make them feel a little bit more comfortable knowing what to expect, who we are," Rothschild Fire Department EMT firefighter Emily Doback said. "If they see us and recognize us, that's the best thing we can do for them."

The goals of the event are to promote safety and raise enough money to help send 10 veterans to Washington D.C. on the Never Forgotten Honor Flights in September and October.

"We care about the community," Globe University's community relations specialist Christine Ellis said. "We care about our students. And we care about veterans. We are a yellow ribbon school and we have many students, as well as staff and faculty that are veterans and so it seemed like a really fitting organization to partner with."

Friday's event raised more than $1,000. They need $5,000 to be able to send all 10 veterans.

Globe University is taking donations through September. People can drop off donations at their Wausau campus main office.
