COTTAGE GROVE, Wis. (AP) — Health officials say a middle school student in the Monona Grove School District has been diagnosed and treated for an E. coli infection.

The student attends Glacial Drumlin School in Cottage Grove. Public Health Madison and Dane County spokesman Jeff Golden tells the Wisconsin State Journal that it appears to be an "isolated case."

Golden says the student's sibling also exhibited symptoms, but the infection had not been confirmed.

The school informed parents Friday afternoon that two students were diagnosed and treated for E. coli, a bacteria that can cause diarrhea and cramping, but also anemia and potentially life-threatening kidney failure.

Principal Renee Tennant says the cases were not school-related, but parents were notified as a precaution.
