The Wausau Farmers Market is going high-tech. They've made some big 21st century adjustments recently, and as Kristen Guilfoos found out, they're paying off.
After years of being cash-only, you can now use your debit card. On Saturday mornings, there is a stand set up where you can swipe your debit card and get tokens in return. You can then go spend those tokens at any stand that accepts them. You can also swipe your FoodShare card.
Since they started the program in 2011, FoodShare card spending at the Farmers Market has nearly doubled, and they're seeing more and more people take advantage of the debit card options too.
The Farmers Market is on River Drive and is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. While you can spend the tokens on either day, you can only use your debit card to get the tokens on Saturdays.
The Weston Farmers Market also offers the token system when they are open on both Tuesdays and Saturdays.
