STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) -- A state agency accuses the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point of failing to take proper precautions while having asbestos removed from a campus building.

The violations were listed in a report by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.

The agency gave the university until Sept. 13 to comply with corrective orders. School officials reject the charges and are appealing.

The 2010 project involved removing floor tiles that contained asbestos.
The agency said the school failed to notify employees appropriately and provide alternate walking routes to help them avoid the worksite. A university spokesman tells the Stevens Point Journal all work was done properly.

Asbestos exposure has been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer.
