Trick or Treat: How to Stay Healthy This Halloween


Trick-or-treat is just days away. While many kids are hoping to score the treat, parents are worried all the added sugar will play a trick on their kid's balanced diets.

Kids are stocking up and parents are bracing themselves for the sugar high. Yes, it's Halloween once again. While it's not bad for your ghost or goblin to indulge, doctors warn everything in moderation.

"Enjoy some candy, but don't be eating candy all day," Dentist Dr. Joe Ferraro advises.

Dr. Ferraro says he's been seeing more dental decay in children because of sugar. Halloween candy is no different.

"It's just like with soda," He explains. "If you're sipping on soda all day long, all that sugar and acid is on your teeth all the time. It's going to cause dental disease over time. "

Dirty teeth aren't doctors only concerns this Halloween. While your kids are sharing candy, they're also sharing germs. Pediatrician Doctor Larry Gordon tells NewsChannel 7 the most germ infested areas are usually door knobs, door bells and potentially candy wrappers themselves.

"If you can take it from the wrapper and pop it into your mouth without touching so you're not touching all the wrappers and getting whatever germs have been there, that's the best way to cut down on that," Dr. Gordon suggests.

Parents should also examine all their kid's candy before they start eating it.

So wash your hands, brush your teeth and enjoy the holiday!
