As the weather consistently stays warm, chances are you'll find yourself spending more time outdoors. And that can mean exposing yourself to pesky wood ticks.
The easiest way to protect yourself is a dose of prevention such as using insect repellants that contain DEET or keeping covered head to toe.
Ticks like to crawl up legs and attach to skin usually near the pelvic region or for women- on the nape of the neck. If you spot a tick there is no immediate need to go to the doctor, but you do need to remove it.
Doctor Matt Hall, an infectious disease consultant says using tweezers and gentle traction is the best way to remove a tick. He advises against other methods such as using matches or Vaseline. After removing the tick you will want to watch the area for infection.
Ticks, specifically deer ticks, also bring the threat of Lyme Disease. Dr. Hall says the best indicator that you may have is a fever and rash.
"The key about the rash is that it's red and expanding. So if it looks like a baseball one day and the next day it's looking like a softball, obviously it gets to the size of a volleyball you know you have something. That, that's the characteristic of the rash from Lyme Disease”, he explains.
Lyme Disease can be tough to detect. Sometime patients can go weeks without being diagnosed.
