Study: Kids Taking in Just as Much Salt as Adults

It's a surprising fact. Kids are taking in just as much salt as adults. That's according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Local medical experts say it's concerning because the more sodium kids take in, the greater the risk of high blood pressure. They say kids should only be getting less than 2.3 grams of sodium a day and you can limit how much they get.

"If you look at the label where it indicates sodium it will tell you how many grams or miligrams are in a serving," says Lori Erdman, Cardiac Nurse Practitioner with Cardiovascular Associates.

She says it's also important to avoid processed foods and fast food places and to eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains because they tend to be lower in sodium. She says it's also important to exercise.
