The Wisconsin College of Osteopathic Medicine and Aspirus Hospital are joining together to bring a medical school to the city.

Gregg Silberg, the Dean of the college said, students will have easy access to rural areas of the state because of the central location of Wausau. He added that usually students stay where they train and that will continue to facilitate growth in the area.

Additionally the medical school, means more available positions in administration

"The greatest effect is going to be in the local community. I mean it's going to stimulate jobs, bring in jobs. We're looking at 130 jobs about the time that the school opens and takes it's first student. So that alone is new jobs that will be coming to the area," Silberg said.

The proposal is in the beginning phase. In the next 4-6 months they will negotiate with their partners and then make a decision.

Leaders hope by August of 2013 the first class will be in session.

Silberg said there are a lot of health care opportunities in the South East part of Wisconsin, but central areas are seeing a shortage of doctors.

The Association of American Medical College reports that in 2020 America may have a shortage of about 91,000 physicians.

Planners here in Wausau said this school will help change that projection.

There are currently two medical schools in Wisconsin. One in Madison and the other in Milwaukee.
