Health App Developed in Marshfield

We love our smartphones because it means we can get Facebook, Twitter, and an array of social media options right at our fingertips.

A new application, or "app," developed by the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation aims to improve your health. It's called "Heart Health Mobile," and is fairly easy to use. You simply input numbers such as your height, weight, blood pressure, and whether you have had a heart attack or stroke before, and it tells you whether you are at risk for heart disease or a stroke.

"At the end of the day this app will empower people more than when they were without it," says Jeff Van Wormer, an epidemiologist with the research foundation. "They can now get a better sense of their cardiovascular disease risk and it fits right in their pocket."

The app also offers educational information about heart disease and allows users to find nearby locations for cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.

Heart Health Mobile won a national competition that challenged competitors to develop a program that will help improve heart health in the U.S. For winning, The Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation received $100,000 that will support the app's development and future versions.
