MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) -- The process of signing up people for insurance under the federal health overhaul law is being discussed at meetings across the state.

More than 60 people from eight southern Wisconsin counties gathered Tuesday for the first of 10 meetings planned over the next two weeks.

State Medicaid director Brett Davis says he expects more than a thousand people to attend the meetings to get more information and learn how they can participate in signing people up for health insurance under the new marketplaces, or exchanges, created under the law.

Applicants can be taken for those starting in October. They go live in January.

Davis says the goal is to have a strategic plan for moving forward put together by Sept. 16.
