Aspirus Offers Mammograms for Low Income Women

An organizer says there's a vital need for free breast cancer screenings.

According to the American Cancer Society - there are more than 2 million women in America who have been treated for breast cancer.

However - thanks to new treatments and awareness, death rates from the disease have declined in recent years.

Still, there are women who need yearly mammograms but can't afford one.

"Some women can't have screenings and are not eligible with insurance or they are afraid of having a screening," says Sheri Holmes, an organizer and R.N. at Aspirus Hospital.

She says there is nothing to fear and that women should be more afraid of not getting yearly screenings.

To qualify for free screenings at Aspirus - you need to be 40 years of age and not covered by your insurance.

The hospital will also accept some women who have a high insurance deductible.

If a problem is detected during a mammogram - the procedures that follow will also be covered.
