Confusion Lingers Ahead of Healthcare Marketplace Opening

With less than a week until the opening of the online health insurance marketplace, there's still a lot confusion about what will happen and when.

John Kelly, chief marketing officer of Security Health Plan says late Wednesday night the insurance providers across the country received the official go-ahead from the federal government to begin offering plans next week under the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare.

Steps have been taken to streamline the application process, including the amount of paperwork. "They've dropped it down to three pages so it should be relatively easy to get through," Kelly said. "A lot of that information is the personal demographic information you have to share with the federal government as you go through that particular application but it's quite a bit simpler than it was originally."

He believes a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that rates can vary based on family size and income. "Each person has a choice they want to make about their own physician," Kelly said, "about which hospital they want and what they can afford and this will allow them to get that individual information."

Most insurance providers, including Security Health Plan, will offer online and in-person support over the next few months for those with lingering questions.

Though the marketplace opens Tuesday, October 1st, nothing takes effect until January, giving people time to consider their options.
