The new year is always a good time to implement a healthier lifestyle and most of the time that includes eating better. There are several health food trends that are gaining in popularity, including cleanses - where you eat certain foods (typically juice) and herbs in an attempt to detoxify your body.

Different types of cleanses including the juice cleanse, where devotees consume nothing but fresh juice for a 3-7 days, are becoming a more common way to kick start a healthy diet.

"If you're having a lot of health issues it might be a good idea to cleanse and it might be a bad idea to cleanse," said Jennifer Hayek, owner of Natural Living in Antigo. "Anytime you do something to your body that might be extreme all at once you have to make sure there's not a health problem that might be compromised," she said.

However, Hayek says it could also be just what you need.

"The liver is a place where a lot of our toxins build up from the foods that we're eating all of the time and especially coming off of the holidays we all tend to have our treats then - and the liver can tend to get kind of congested," she said.

She says even if you eat a healthy diet, you're still exposed to air pollution, water pollution and other toxins.

Shoppers, toting lengthy lists, have been flooding the natural food store over the last few days looking to eat their way to better health in 2014.

Hannah Wolfe eats organic, natural foods and does two cleanses a year.

"When I did those cleanses I just noticed that I had a lot more energy, I felt lighter, I was less bloated and it just felt good to do a cleanse," Wolfe said.

The nation's food supply has changed dramatically over the last fifty years, Hayek says. She notes how we're eating more processed foods and fewer ones that are pulled right from the ground. But now, perhaps, things are turning around.

"People are going back to basics, because people are sick," she said.

To feel better, they're turning to the latest super foods. One of the most popular new super foods is the chia seed, the very same that adorn the famous chia pet. They're packed with fiber, protein, calcium, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Hayek says the chia seed is nutritious and great at absorbing toxins, which are then eliminated from the body. It's also helpful in the detoxification process. The hemp seed is also a popular protein, that is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

There are several different types of cleanses, if you want to try one, it's advised you talk to your doctor.
