Assembly Passes Dental Health Insurance Change

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Republican-controlled state Assembly has passed a bill that would allow dentists to charge more for certain services.

The bill passed Wednesday on an 89-8 bipartisan vote despite opposition from Wisconsin's powerful business lobby.

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce urged that the bill be defeated, arguing that it would make Wisconsin less competitive and amounted to unwarranted government intrusion in private contracts.

The bill would force changes in existing contracts between dentists and insurers so that insurance companies can no longer require dentists to charge less for certain services to in-network patients.

The Wisconsin Dental Association backs the bill, saying it will provide more honesty in dental billing and end the practice of shifting costs for some services from one group of patients to another.
