Two Wisconsin metro areas have made the American Lung Association’s 2012 list of “Most Polluted Cities” in the categories of short-term particle pollution.

Green Bay is #14 and the Milwaukee metro area is #20. Several cities in California topped the annual State of the Air report. The report explains particle pollution that lasts for just a short while may cause strokes. Researchers found that breathing levels of traffic-related particles were linked to increased risk of stroke within 12 to 14 hours of breathing them.
There is some good news for the badger state. The study’s findings list many Wisconsin cities as having the cleanest ozones. The Madison, Appleton, Wausau, La Crosse, and Janesville areas took honors as having some of the cleanest air.
