Flu season will soon be upon us. Although it doesn't technically start until November, doctors say now is the time to get vaccinated. This year there are a variety of options, especially for those of you who are a little needle shy.

The solution to your flu shot woes is a needle 90% thinner and one-tenth the length of a traditional needle. It's called the intradermal flu vaccine and it will be available in select locations this fall. Because of the size of the needle and the location of the injection, under the skin versus in the muscle, the new injection promises to be a lot less painful.

Unfortunately there is a catch. Only people between the ages of 18 and 64 can get their flu vaccine with this smaller needle.

Family Nurse Practitioner at Bridge Community Health Clinic, Nancy Javor, says the reason is, "There is a standard dosing in there and it is a more concentrated dose, which could place the older generation and the younger generation at risk."

Anyone who has a mild sensitivity to the traditional flu vaccine is encouraged to try the intradermal vaccine, as it contains 40% less flu virus than the traditional injection , but is just as effective.

Not every clinic or drugstore is offering the new flu vaccine, so be sure to call ahead.

Both flu vaccines are covered by most insurance providers. If your insurance does not cover the vaccine, the average price is only $25.00 at most clinics and drugstores.
