World's Largest Trivia Contest This Weekend

This weekend Stevens Point will play host to the World's largest trivia contest. Trivia 44 kicked off at 6:00PM Friday at UW-Stevens Point's student run radio station 90 FM. More than 400 teams are participating in the contest this year and for many of these teams trivia's not just a game, but a family tradition.

Richard Bamberg founded his trivia team, Dad's Computers, 35 years ago with just his immediate family members. Now the team boasts more than 40 members and spans three generations.

"We first started with kids that went to school with my kids. They wanted to come over and play trivia so we had a bunch of these small, little kids answering questions and they're still coming to trivia," Bamberg chuckled as he remembered the early days of his now elite trivia team.

Dad, of course, was the original team captain. But he handed over the reins to daughter Patty Johnson in 1999.

"Once you start playing trivia you don't want to stop," Johnson told NewsChannel 7.

With 24 hours of trivia ahead of them, this weekend is no joking matter. Dad's Computers is looking for it's first win after coming in second these past two years.

"For some of us trivia is a year round ah like a job almost because we all take notes on everything and put it all together so we're ready for trivia," Johnson explained.

Ready they are, with 36 computers, a library of reference materials and boxes full of old games, cereal boxes and even candy wrappers. The whole family will remain hunkered down in mom and dad's basement until trivia ends Sunday at midnight. But win or loose, there's always family.

"What's great is my kids all come home," Bamberg beamed. "I have 4 kids and they all come home with their families and it's wonderful."

"It's more like a family reunion. My siblings don't live in town so they come. Sometimes people don't make it for Christmas but they make it for trivia," Johnson explained.

The ten teams with the most points by the end of the contest Sunday will all receive trophies and bragging rights for an entire year.
