Wausau Schools Could See Additional Resource Officers

Soon, schools in the Wausau School District could be seeing an increased number of School Resource Officers inside middle and elementary schools across the district.

The Wausau School District is working with the Wausau Police Department to add two officers that would focus on meeting the needs of students in the school system.

One officer would be a regular School Resource Officer, while another would be a neighborhood officer that would patrol the area around local schools.

Figuring out how to pay for the additional officers is a key aspect of the proposal. The Wausau Police Department and Wausau School District may have found a compromise.

"We are requesting that they split the cost 50% with us during the school year, which would be approximatly 9 months, and we would cover 100% of the other three months of that position." Says Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel

The proposal needs to be approved by the City of Wausau and the Wausau School Board. The district hopes to have the new officers in place by early 2015.
