Wausau Finance Director to Serve 10 Day Suspension

The City of Wausau’s Finance Director will serve a ten day unpaid suspension following an investigation by the city into allegations of harassment.

According to a report obtained by Newschannel 7, Maryanne Groat is accused of harassing City Attorney Ann Jacobson and violating several city policies.

The city attorney claims Groat created a hostile work environment. Jacobson and Groat were at odds on a number of issues, including the Thomas Street project. The report indicates that Groat got an outside legal opinion about the project and never presented the city attorney’s opinion to the city council.

"The fact that there were two legal opinions and one was not given to us raised a red flag. With the city attorney filing the harrassment lawsuit about passed procedures and what was happening, at that point the city council felt they had to step in.” Says Alderman David Oberbeck

Groat’s suspension is just the latest in a series of problems for city leaders. Just last month Wausau’s Public Works Director Brad Marquardt stepped down after he was accused of improperly handling city contracts.

Maryanne Groat must complete her suspension by the end of 2014, however she does not have to serve it all at once.

Newschannel 7 reached out to Maryanne Groat for comment on the suspension, however our calls were not returned.
