Wausau East High School "Adopts" School Affected by Sandy

Posted: Tue 4:24 PM, Nov 13, 2012

Wausau East High School students are adopting a school in New York still without power after Superstorm Sandy.

The PS15 elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn was flooded after the storm, leaving students without a place to learn.

"We received an email from one of our school board representatives she had a friend and a teacher that worked out in Red Hook, New York and asked if we would be willing to adopt her school," said Lori Williams, a Spanish and German teacher who also advises the student council.

She told her students on the student council, and they decided they could help.

"I can't imagine waking up and having the school be gone because this is a place where we go every day so to wake up and see that you can't go there anymore has to be heartbreaking," said Ken Stetzer, the president of the student council.

Students are collecting school supplies, clothing, toiletries and money that will be sent to the community hopefully before Thanksgiving.

The students also promise to write all 395 elementary students a letter so they can connect with those who are helping them.

The donation drive started Monday, and they've already collected a lot of supplies.

Anyone who wants to donate can drop of items at Wausau East High School.
