A project 10 years in the making is going to take a little longer. The new Wausau Curling Center was scheduled to open this coming Saturday, but organizers announced this week that the building will not be ready in time.
Although they say the ice is good to go, it's all those finishing touches causing the delay. Plumbing, electrical, lighting and floors all still have to be done. Curling Club members aren't sure how long it will take to get those things finished, but now that the finish line is in sight they're looking forward to the future.
"We're excited to have the people come here from other parts of the state, other parts of the United States, to come to little old Wausau and enjoy a facility like this," Wausau Curling Club member Kelly Fraser told NewsChannel 7.
The new Curling Center features eight Olympic size sheets, making it only one of four like it in the state.
The center will be used by the Wausau Curling Club's nearly 350 members as well as a number of high school teams. In addition, Fraser says they've already been approached by members of the U.S. curling team who want to come and train in this new facility.
