We are a few days into the states annual gun deer season and hunters in our area have been very successful. The DNR says harvest in the first weekend is up nearly 20 percent over last years.
That success, and the warm weather, has deer processors wanting hunters to make sure they get the deer in immediately after the kill. It can mean the difference between getting your deer back, or losing a prize buck because its spoiled.
Workers at Country Fresh Meats in Weston say one thing they want hunters to know is how quickly meat can go bad, especially with the warm weather this season has seen.
Mia Bayer, Co-Owner of Country Fresh Meats says it’s something the store deals with every year. "If it's not cooled down right away, it will have an awful smell when we pull the hide. From time to time, we may have to call a hunter up and say you need to come and pick up your deer. We don’t want that to happen. I encourage hunters to get their deer in right away."
Bayer says they have already seen hundreds of deer come in over the past four days, a large majority of those deer have been bigger bucks.
One way to make sure that prize buck does not go to waste is putting ice on the deer as soon as you have field dressed it. Country Fresh Meats in Weston does have a deer cooler open 24 hours a day. That cooler can save deer from spoiling over night, and is open for customers to use.
If you are a hunter that just doesn’t know what to do with that freshly killed deer, there is an option for you. Places like Country Fresh Meats are accepting donated deer. Those deer will then be taken to area food pantries. A perfect gesture with Thanksgiving just a couple days away.
