Two golden retrievers have died after their owners took them for a walk, and the dogs broke through the ice on the Wisconsin River.

It happened just after noon on Thursday near Fern Island in Wausau. A passerby walking his dog heard screaming across the island, and went to investigate.

"They jumped 10 feet off thinking it was snow, and plunged through and went immediately under the ice and were swept downstream," Tim Stelzel said, "and drowned immediately, and they could not be consoled."

Tim says this needs to be a reminder to parents and dog owners to keep their loved ones close by as spring makes the ice more dangerous.
