Trips on a Tank: Minocqua Area
With high gas prices, many people are looking to take a trip that won't break the bank. As part of our special series "Trips on a Tank", we highlight some Northwoods locations where families can have fun and kids can learn a thing or two while they're at it.
If it's family fun you're looking for this summer, then look no further than a short trip up north. The Minocqua and Eagle River areas are filled with great places to take the kids.
For more than 53 years the Wildwood Wildlife Park has remained a staple for families visiting the Minocqua area. With more than 750 animals and more than 1,000 birds, there's a lot to see and do.
What sets it apart from many zoos in bigger metropolitan areas, is the hands on experience that kids enjoy. They can pet and hand feed many of the animals.
"It's quite an experience. Everyday is a different day here with what you can encounter. Being able to touch a porcupine, pet a skunk or feed a deer, they just love it", said Park Director, Judy Domaszek.
For a more cultural experience, The Waswagoning Indian Village is a great place for families to learn about what life was like for Native Americans hundreds of years ago.
Located on the Lac Du Flambeau Indian Reservation, just west of downtown Minocqua, families can tour a traditional indian village that has been featured in Reader's Digest, the Chicago Tribune and other publications for it's historic qualities.
"Broadening your own intellect, your own mind about other people who were living in Wisconsin and throughout the world, not only enhances your own culture, but brings a sense of togetherness with other people", said Facility Owner, Nick Hockings.
Just a little further north, in Eagle River, is the only children's museum in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The Northwoods Children's Museum is home to tons of hands on activities where kids can have fun while learning.
"They think they're playing, they think they're out just having a good time, but they're learning things while they're doing it and they don't even realize it", said Executive Director, Rouleen Gartner.
A one day pass costs just $7 and it's good all day, so you can leave and come back, but most kids never want to leave in the first place.
"The other day I actually had a child holding on to the door frame as the adults were pulling him out of here, so the kids could spend hours here", added Gartner.
All 3 locations are open this summer and with a little planning, you could hit all 3 in one day.
