Travelers Hit the Road to Make it Home for Thanksgiving

AAA projects Thanksgiving travel will increase for the fourth consecutive year.

That means busy highways, airports and train stations beginning Wednesday, the busiest travel day.

AAA says 43.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home between Wednesday and Sunday, an increase of nearly one percent from last year.

The vast majority of travelers will get to their destination by automobile.

Lt. Steve Krueger with the Wisconsin State Patrol says the more traffic, the more likelihood of accidents.

"Everybody is looking to see family and a have a good time and the last thing anybody needs is to be involved in a crash or wreck or some other tragedy," Lt. Krueger said.

Slowing down, wearing a seat belt, and keeping a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you are crucial to keep busy roads safe.

Meanwhile many travelers will get to their destination via airplane, although not as many as last year.

At Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee, almost every flight is full, and finally on time. Wednesday morning there were delays in Detroit and Chicago because of heavy fog.

"People are still flying," said James Olson, CWA's director of operations and maintenance. "We're full, you see a lot of families flying, traveling at this time."

Families like the Rozellas.

"We're here to pick up our son who is flying in from Binghamton, New York and our daughter came in yesterday from Pittsburgh," said Carol Rozella.

In fact, everyone in the family had to do some traveling ahead of Thanksgiving.

Carol and her husband Walt arrived in Mosinee from New York Sunday.

"So this is our third trip to the airport in a week," she said.

Though they experienced a few delays, the trip is well worth it to spend time with loved ones.

"We've been trying to fly in the last few years but last year we couldn't. This year we did, my dad's almost 86 so we try to come out and visit him and some of our other family and friends," Walt Rozella said.

Though most people will travel on Wednesday and Sunday things won't slow down too much in between. Along with holiday travelers, shoppers and deer hunters will also be hitting the road.
