The dreaded day is right around the corner, but if you have not yet filed your taxes, help is still available.

Individuals with a low to moderate income, disabilities, as well as non-English speaking taxpayers, military personnel and the elderly can get help preparing their taxes and file for free with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

"Our program allows them to come in, get help from people who have knowledge of tax law that can help them get a bigger refund," says Deanna Meek, who has worked with the program in the past.

The Department of Revenue is also encouraging you to E-file. 80% of Wisconsinites will file electronically this year. The DOR says you can get your refund faster this way.

"Some people are intimidated by electronic filing or just by the tax filing process in general," says Secretary Richard Chandler of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. "For certain categories of people we provide the volunteer assistance that will help get them through the process."

Secretary Chandler says one of the biggest mistakes people make when filing is overlooking deductions and credits. If you are unsure about anything tax related, the best thing to do is ask a professional for help.

You can reach the Department of Revenue Customer Service line at (608) 266-2486. For businesses, call (608) 266-2776.
