Snow Plow Drivers Prepping for Winter

The weather may be warm and sunny, but snow could start falling anytime now. So, Wausau Public Works employees broke out the plows to prepare.

"This is their chance to get out and practice," explains Wausau Street Superintendent, Don Skare, "its been about 6 months or so since the plows and the sanders have been on the trucks."

Crews participated in a little competition Wednesday, driving he trucks through an obstacle course, to get practice maneuvering the trucks.

"They're trying to see if they hit a cone, or barrel, they'll lose some points."

Not only do the drivers get bragging rights for having the best score, the winner gets a full day of paid vacation.

I got into a truck to see just how hard it is to navigate the course and it's much harder than it looks. Not only is the snow plow big, drivers have a lot to concentrate on besides just clearing away snow.

"Being aware that people are going to be out there, not everyone is 6'5, and you're going to see them over the top of the snow bank, some are older people that are bent over and they're shoveling snow and you can't even see them."

So whether there is snow in the forecast or not, crews will be ready to head out at the first sign of flurries.
