Property Taxes to Increase by Less Than 1%

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new report says property taxes across Wisconsin are increasing less than 1 percent on average.

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance report says net property taxes statewide are increasing seven tenths of a percent. That is up from two-tenths of a percent increase last year, but less than the 2.8 percent and 4.2 percent increases from the two previous years.

Taxpayers Alliance president Todd Berry says a major reason for the small increase this year is state-imposed revenue and levy limits on local governments.

Property tax bills are being mailed to homeowners this month. While the average increase is low, bills vary widely based on an individual homeowner's circumstances. The largest users of property taxes in Wisconsin are K-12 schools, municipalities, counties and technical college districts.
