With a new school year comes new friends, teachers and books, but for student in Wausau, it also brings a new security measure.
The start of the 2013-2014 school years also means all interior doors at the schools' main entrances will be locked once the school day starts. Visitors must now use an intercom system so school staff know who is entering the building.
The Director of Pupil Services at the district says part of what prompted the security change was the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"You know, you see what goes on in that type of a scenario and you you can take a step back and put your children, and the children of our district and that those classrooms easily," says Dr. Lindell, "and you want to do something differently to increase the safety and security for those kids.
Dr. Lindell says they've had mostly positive responses from the new security measures. And while it may take you a little more time to get into a school building, he hoes the added security will be worth it.
