Tara Altenburg knows how expensive it can be to support a large family, especially when you're a mom of five.
Tara can't afford dental care for her kids, but on Friday all of her kids were able to see a dentist...free of charge.
"We were really lucky that we heard about this and came today," she says.
The Altenburg's joined other low-income families in the national "Give Kids a Smile" Day. One local dentist treated almost 30 kids.
Dr. Jennifer Wavel of Cherry Tree Dental, says,"We are doing dental examinations...fluoride, cleaning, all for the children."
Even though the dentists saw dozens of patients, they all seemed more than happy to participate in the event. Because they understand the importance of healthy teeth at every age.
"It's extremely important for them to develop good habits at a young age. You can prevent a lot of dental need by having those good habits. Brushing, flossing, and getting fluoride in your drinking water," Dr. Wavel says.
February is National Dental Hygiene Month, as dentists try to raise awareness about oral care and prevention.
