Local students got a chance to read 'til they were green...literally! Third and fourth graders at Marathon City Elementary School got to show off their reading skills to family and community members by reading books and their own pieces. Adults handed out gold coins to the children if they thought they did a good job. The kids then cashed them in for green prizes in honor of St. Patrick's Day.
"They're very excited just because literacy is such a huge thing in our building and we really emphasize it as teachers," says Janna Oelrich, a third grade teacher who helped organize the event.
Teachers say the kids practice for the event by reading in blocks of thirty minutes and upward.
