A furry, four-legged friend could join the Tomahawk Police Department as soon as June 1st. A Dutch Shepherd will be used to help detect and locate illegal narcotics as well as track suspects fleeing a scene and locate missing individuals.

The K-9 unit has been made possible by community donations. The donations will also cover all associated training expenses and the cost to purchase an already equipped K-9 unit squad car. Some of the funding has come from selling police shoulder badges and challenge coins.

As of Thursday, the department has raised $47,000.
