US Judge Holds off Ruling on Chippewa Deer Hunt

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A federal judge has held off on deciding whether Wisconsin's Chippewa bands can hunt deer at night.

The Chippewa have authorized tribal hunters to go after deer at night across northern Wisconsin response to the state's new wolf hunt. State attorneys contend night hunting is too dangerous and wants U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb to rule the agency's long-standing prohibition on the practice extends to the tribes.

Tribal and state attorneys spent the last day and a half arguing in front of Crabb over whether the judge should allow the night hunt.

Crabb concluded the hearing by saying she would give the two sides until Monday to file final briefs. It was unclear when she might hand down a decision
