Income-Based Program Helps You File Taxes for Free

Posted: Sun 10:03 AM, Feb 24, 2013

Tax season is something many of us dread, but there is a way you can have your taxes prepared for free.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is open to residents with a household income of $51,000 a year or less, who do not own a business, farm, or rental property, or have capital gains.

The program runs every Saturday through April 6th. Most Saturdays it's held at UW-Marathon County, however off-site events are held as well.

Appointments are required, but you can come in on a walk-in basis to complete returns for free using special computer software provided.

"Our program allows them to come in and get help from people who have knowledge of tax laws," says Deanna Meek, a coordinator with the program. "It can help them get a bigger refund or at least just do their return so they don't get in trouble later."
