If you've been out on area roads you are probably well aware the slippery conditions have made traveling almost impossible.
That’s even after dozens of salt trucks have been out in full force trying to make roadways safe for traveling.
From city streets, to area highways, most roadways have been covered in a thin layer of ice for most of the day. That’s when the Marathon County Highway Department comes into play.
The department has 35 trucks with plows and salt bins ready to go. Starting early Sunday afternoon, all 35 of those trucks were out and about, salting slick roads they best they could.
John Bangart, Operations Supervisor for the Marathon County Highway Department says ice is the hardest element for drivers to deal with.
"I’d rather have snow. At least you can get traction with snow. A lot of times with ice, you cant see it. It’s just tough for everybody. The drivers and the public in itself can all be in a pretty dangerous situation," says Bangart.
Bangart says that the biggest thing they have to deal with is other vehicles driving way too fast.
This slippery weather is not supposed to be moving out of our area for a few hours still, so the highway department wants to warn people to be aware if they do head out.
Giving yourself that extra bit of time can help keep yourself safe, but also keep salt trucks from having to worry about you while they're doing their job.
