CLAYTON, N.Y. (AP) -- Recreational boaters on the St. Lawrence River have a new online tool to help them navigate the Thousand Islands and other stretches of the waterway along the Canadian border in northern New York.

The Oswego-based New York Sea Grant says the real-time Great Lakes Observing System forecasting tool is now available for boaters on the St. Lawrence. The new tool extends Great Lakes global observing technology to the river with some data specific to the St. Lawrence system.

The web-based application provides current and 12-hour forecasts of water currents and depths for the river. Boaters and marina operators can access the website by computer and smart phone.

The Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Great Lakes Observing System Program says the organization plans to extend the scope of the new tool across the entire Great Lakes basin in 2013.
