Amherst Woman to Spend 6 Years in Prison Following Fatal OWI Crash

A 24-year-old Amherst woman convicted of killing one person during a drunk driving crash last fall will spend six years in prison followed by four years extended supervision.

Investigators say Hanna Schacht was driving drunk when she struck another vehicle killing Daniel Wetzel, 51. Richard Wetzel, 31, was injured in the crash. The crash happened at 10:20 a.m. Sept. 15 on Buelow Road near County Road D in the Town of Lenark, near Amherst.

According to the Portage County Sheriff's Department, Richard Wetzel was turning eastbound out of his driveway on Buelow Road when an eastbound vehicle driven by Schacht struck the rear of Wetzel's vehicle causing it to strike a tree.

Witnesses told investigators Schacht was speeding at the time of the crash and had been drinking the night before.

According to the Stevens Point Journal, Schacht was charged in 2012 with failing to report an accident that caused a death in Woodstock, Ill.

Schacht will receive credit for 387 days she's already spent in jail. Her driver's license will be revoked for three years.
