Crews from the Department of Public Works are working to fix a water main break causing a single lane closure on Prospect Avenue in the City of Wausau.
The break was reported at 8:51am Sunday morning near the bridge between Single Avenue and Sumner Street.
The break caused a basement of a home on the east side of the street to flood. The water flow has been diverted using sand bags to prevent any further damage to the property.
In order to provide basic water service to area residents, DPW will allow some water to flow into the storm drains near the site until the break can be fixed. This measure is expected to temporarily reduce water pressure in area homes and business.
Wausau Police Lt. Michael Juedes asks people stay away from the area blocked off with cones, as the break may have caused material underneath the road and sidewalk to erode.
Crews also responded to another break in the City of Wausau Saturday on the 1100 block of East Wausau Avenue. That break has since been fixed.
Lt. Juedes says the break on Prospect Avenue is expected to be fixed by Monday. He adds the water main breaks were likely caused by the spring thaw.
