Cold Weather Concerns Northwoods Business Owners

If you are looking to get a hotel room in Tomahawk for the start of the fishing season, you can be assured that there will be plenty of room at the Bridge Inn. In fact, it has been that way for quite some time.

"We didn't have snow in January when we normally have a lot of snowmobilers .Then we had snow that wouldn't go away." says Bridge Inn owner Ronald Kaplanek.

In a community like Tomahawk that is heavily reliant on tourism, not having a strong turn out for the fishing opener can really put a dent in the profits of local businesses. It is a reality Ronald Kaplanek is all too familiar with.

"I've been around this business a long time and you just come to work with it." he says.

Across the street at the Bridge Restaurant, where the back patio is covered in a layer of snow and ice, it's the same story.

"We have a definite decline in business when we have snow rather than sunshine." says owner Andy Kaplanek.

Down the street at Chuck's Sport Shop, it is a bit of a different story. There are many signs that die-hard fisherman are not about to skip out on the fishing season opener.

"It's a tradition. We look forward to opening day of fishing season and opening day of hunting season. Opening day of fishing season is a tradition." says fishing guide Jim Olsen.

While business is booming at Chuck's, many other businesses in the area are still holding out hope that the mercury will rise soon so that they can once again welcome locals and tourists alike with open arms.
