Man Charged in '12 Stevens Point Heroin Overdose Death Plead Not Guilty

A 24-year-old man charged with providing heroin to a to a Stevens Point woman in May 2012 resulting in her death has pleaded not guilty.

Milton Smith is charged with 1st degree reckless homicide. He remains in the Portage County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

According to court documents, on May 10, 2012 Stevens Point Police responded to a home on the 400 block of West Street North for a woman who was not breathing. Twenty-six-year-old Jessica Newby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Autopsy results show Newby died from a heroin overdose.

Investigators say Smith, and another man, who is also expected to be charged; Seville Johnson, 25 sold heroin to Newby.

Johnson is in custody in the Pontiac Correctional Facility in Illinois. A future court date has not been set for Johnson.
