Two month old Castan Schisel is spending tonight in a Milwaukee hospital awaiting a potentially life-saving heart transplant while the community rallies around his family saying prayers and raising money to pay medical bills.
Raffle prizes and auction items lined tables inside and outside of his family's bar, Smitty's Bar and Grill, in Antigo. Among the items being auctioned off, four sky box tickets to the Packer and Cardinals pre-season game as well as a collectable Budweiser mirror. The proceeds from the mirror the family says will go to the Nate Cook Fund in support of a young boy who was badly burned.
Castan's mom, Marlena Schisel, returned home for the event after 72 day by her son's side.
"He's doing good." Marlena told NewsChannel 7. "He's sleeping off and on. He's a happy little guy, always smiling."
While the family continues to hope for a new heart for their little boy, they also don't forget what that means for another family.
"There's also a family that has to loose out right now'" Castan's aunt Shelly Schisel said. "It's, I guess, It's just hard to think that we can have so much joy when there is someone else who is going to have sorrow. We don't know where they are or what they're doing or who they are, if it's a boy or girl, but we just wanted to say a prayer and put a little message in the balloon from Castan, just to send it up so that individual is not forgotten too."
Balloons were given to children before they were let go into the skies above Antigo.
A late estimate of the event suggests that over five hundred people attended the benefit.
