The mild weather isn't helping with the snow, but that isn't stopping a variety of winter sports from happening this weekend. Athletes of all ages are competing at the Badger State Games, which includes the sports of curling, billiards, alpine and nordic skiing, bowling, and figure skating.
The figure skating event got underway Friday morning at the Mosinee Recreation Center. Skaters of all ages competed for medals in jumping and footwork competitions.
Organizers of the event, such as Julie Blomquist, president of the Mosinee Silverblade Figure Skating Club, say it doesn't matter where an athlete places, it's having fun that matters.
"That's the payoff -- when they go out on the ice and do their thing and perform," she says. "Whether they get first or second or third or last that's OK, it's just nice to watch them."
Figure skaters seemed to be enjoying the day as well.
"It was very fun, I was very energetic with my music and everything and it just got me into the mood," says 15-year-old Kelsey Ludwig, who won a gold medal. "It was a great way to start."
