The number of foreign students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has declined more than 10 percent this year.

UW officials say it's a trend blamed in part on tighter visa regulations.

Marc Fang, director of the university's foreign students program, says the school has approximately 220 international students on average, the third largest number among UW campuses.

Due to enhanced security precautions enacted in the aftermath of Sept. 11, most foreign students departed the U.S. last spring forewarned.

The government advised the students the visa application process that took approximately a week in 2001 could be extended by up 20 days.

Then, in late August, the government told students and schools the wait could possibly stretch to months.
