A Wausau Police Department detective is facing criminal charges.

Twenty four year veteran Charles Knapp is accused of drunk driving and of carrying a weapon while intoxicated. He made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Officials say they performed a sobriety test on Knapp after he had displayed odd behavior while trying to send a report over a police radio.

It showed that Knapp had a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal level of intoxication.

Knapp was reportedly doing private contract work at the time and should not have been carrying city or county law enforcement equipment.

Wausau police officials say they're conducting their own investigation and will decide on whether to discipline Knapp once it's over.
