Interior Secretary Gail Norton says the gray wolf should no longer be under federal protection.

The animal has been protected by the Endangered Species Act in Wisconsin and about 20 other states. It almost disappeared in the lower 48 states in the 1950's.

Now, officials say the wolf population has grown to more than 3000 between Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
