Remember to Re-register

The Do Not Call List started in Wisconsin almost two years ago. About a million and a half people have signed up, but you have to re-sign up every two years, and that means for many people the time has come for them to sign up again.

Tuesday, an investigator with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection taught people how to sign up for the list, which blocks most telemarketing calls.

The department is calling the list a breakthrough in consumer protection because it protects people against telemarketing scams, and Investigator Robert Zaspel says elderly people are often the target.

"They come from a generation of trusting people. They have time on their hands, they don't like to be rude, so they'll talk and listen to a telemarketer."

Margaret Dietrich is signing up for the Do Not Call List. She says she's hoping for just one thing.

"That they don't call. I'm not interested in trips to Florida."

So here's how to re-sign up: you can either call the toll-free number. That's 1-866-966-2255, or you can go online at nocall.wisconsin.gov.

The whole process takes about a minute. You don't have to give your name when you sign up, only your phone number, but it's best to do it before the two year deadline.

The program is updated four times a year, so if you let your registration lag there will be a three month gap when telemarketers will be able to call you.
