Compared to a major city, downtown Wausau's road work is nothing. The span stretches for less than a mile and the delays have so far been relatively small.
"Backup-wise, you're probably looking at five minutes in delays and we're just not used to that," said Roger Luce, Wausau and Marathon County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.
So even a small delay is a headache in Wausau, but not for the business owners we talked with who say the construction is a good thing that will actually help them once the work is complete.
"I think the downtown area's looking very nice. It's made a lot of progress in the last couple of years. I think this will just add a little frosting to the cake," said Dave Jahnke, St. Clair's Menswear owner.
But to get that frosting, drivers in downtown Wausau will have to put up with a sticky situation for the rest of this summer. The road work will include resurfacing all of Forest Street west of 6th and reconfiguring the intersection of 1st Street, River Road and Washington Street.
Wausau city officials say the project will be complete by the end of November.
